What Makes a Healthy Home? How Design Supports Health and Wellbeing
A healthy home creates the conditions for people to breathe well, sleep deeply, recover fully, connect meaningfully and live independently for longer.
According to Australian Government guidance on indoor air quality, Australians spend 90 per cent or more of their time indoors. Our homes now accommodate an increasing proportion of our sleeping, working, exercising, recovering, family and social lives. The quality of the home environment therefore has a continuous influence on how we feel and function each day.
That influence is rarely experienced as a single dramatic event. It accumulates through thousands of ordinary days.
A cold bedroom affects sleep. An overheated living room becomes unusable on summer afternoons. Outside noise interrupts recovery. Poor ventilation allows carbon dioxide, moisture and indoor pollutants to accumulate. Condensation creates conditions in which mould can grow. Poorly placed windows introduce glare or expose rooms to intense western sun.

Can a healthy home help you live longer?
No home can determine how long someone will live. Human health is shaped by genetics, behaviour, relationships, income, healthcare, the broader environment and many interacting factors.
We also cannot live two parallel lives, spending one in a well-designed home and the other in a poorly designed home, then compare the results decades later.
What we can do is follow the scientific evidence showing how housing conditions affect health and wellbeing over time. The World Health Organization’s Housing and Health Guidelines identify relationships between housing and thermal conditions, indoor air quality, injury, accessibility, noise and a range of physical and mental health outcomes.
This evidence gives us a responsible design direction. We can reduce harmful exposures and create conditions associated with better sleep, respiratory health, thermal comfort, concentration, recovery and independence.
Stllhaus translates this knowledge into decisions about where a home sits on its site, how the plan is organised, where windows are placed, how the building envelope performs, which materials are used and how fresh air moves through the home.
These decisions are modelled before construction. The completed home is then tested to establish whether its performance matches the design and modelling.
What should a healthy home feel like?
In many respects, it should feel like nothing.
You should rarely need to think about whether a room will be too hot, too cold or poorly ventilated. You should not wake because the bedroom has become uncomfortable overnight. You should not avoid part of the house because an unprotected western window makes it unbearable during summer.
A home should work so well that the effort behind its performance becomes almost invisible.
You will still experience changing light, warmth, calm, views and a connection with the landscape. Draughts, condensation, excessive carbon dioxide, glare, intrusive noise, temperature swings and the constant interventions required to manage them should recede from daily life.
The home supports its occupants quietly and consistently, leaving them free to direct their attention towards family, work, rest, creativity and the things that give their lives meaning.
What makes a home healthy?
Healthy home design depends on the interaction between many decisions. Orientation, planning, daylight, ventilation, insulation, airtightness, materials, acoustics and landscape must operate as one integrated system.
A product added late in the process cannot resolve fundamental weaknesses in the orientation, plan or building envelope. The work begins with first principles.
Clean, continuously refreshed air
Every person within a home exhales carbon dioxide. Cooking, cleaning products, furnishings and building materials can also introduce moisture, particles and pollutants into the indoor environment. Without sufficient ventilation, these accumulate.
A Stllhaus combines a highly airtight building envelope with continuous filtered mechanical ventilation. Fresh air is supplied to bedrooms and living spaces, while air containing accumulated carbon dioxide, moisture and pollutants is extracted from kitchens, bathrooms and laundries.
This provides reliable ventilation throughout the day and night. Occupants can still open windows whenever they wish, while the quality of the indoor environment is supported continuously in the background.
That distinction matters during cold nights, hot days, heavy rain, bushfire smoke, periods of high pollen, traffic noise or times when security is a concern.
Stable and comfortable temperatures
Thermal comfort begins with the placement of the home and its relationship with the sun.
Orientation, shading and window placement determine which rooms receive useful winter sunlight and which require protection during summer. Insulation, airtightness, high-performance glazing and careful construction then help maintain stable internal conditions.
This reduces draughts, cold internal surfaces, overheating and dramatic temperature differences between rooms. It also lowers the amount of heating and cooling required to keep the home comfortable.
The objective is simple: every room should remain useful throughout the year.
A bedroom should support sleep during hot weather. A living area should be comfortable on a cold Victorian morning. Family members should be able to move through the home without repeatedly adjusting heaters, air conditioners, blinds and windows.
Daylight that supports daily rhythms
Light helps us see while also influencing the body’s daily rhythms.
Our exposure to light contributes to the regulation of sleep and wakefulness. Research examining daylight in residential environments has found that access to circadian-effective daylight can support circadian alignment, sleep and vitality.
Useful daylight requires judgement. Larger areas of glass can introduce glare, excessive heat, privacy concerns and uncomfortable temperature variations when their orientation and shading are poorly resolved.
Stllhaus considers the direction, placement, size and protection of each opening. Daylight is brought into the home where it supports everyday activities, while unwanted heat and glare are controlled.
Quiet where quiet matters
A healthy home should provide places for deep sleep, focused work, conversation and retreat.
Noise may come from roads, neighbours, building services, appliances or other activities within the household. Planning allows quieter rooms to be separated from entrances, living spaces and sources of mechanical noise. Airtight construction, insulation and high-performance windows also reduce the intrusion of external sound.
Acoustic comfort provides the right sound environment for each activity, with enough separation for different lives to occur concurrently.
Materials selected with care
Every internal surface contributes to the environment people inhabit.
Stllhaus considers indoor air quality alongside durability, embodied carbon, maintenance requirements and environmental impact when selecting finishes, adhesives, coatings and building materials.
Moisture management and ventilation are equally important. Even carefully selected materials can perform poorly when exposed to persistent condensation, leaks or uncontrolled humidity.
A healthy material strategy therefore extends from initial specification through construction and into the long-term operation and maintenance of the home.
A daily connection with nature
Nature should form part of everyday life within the home.
Views, gardens, daylight, natural materials and seasonal change can create moments of connection while someone is cooking, working, resting or moving between rooms. These experiences should occur naturally throughout the day.
Architecture and landscape are therefore considered together. Windows frame meaningful views. Outdoor spaces extend daily activities into the garden. Planting provides shade, privacy, habitat and a visible reminder that the home sits within a living environment.

Health also includes the ability to remain independent, connected and secure as circumstances change.
